Sound Therapy
Sound therapy is a deeply soothing and restorative modality that incorporates the use of acoustic tones, frequencies and physical and/or rhythmic vibrations to support the body's healing processes. Sound therapy is also often regarded as a bioenergetic supportive therapy, meaning it connects the body, mind and spirit when in effect. Sound therapy is increasingly being acknowledged for its potential in helping to:
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Relieve and support muscular tension
- Manage and alleviate symptoms of pain
- Support and encourage nervous system down-regulation
- Enhance overall mental health and well-being
- Improve mental clarity
- Support and aid sleep
This is achieved by using various sound frequencies and vibrations both on and off the body. It is well known that sound can influence brainwave activity, and this is why it is deemed to be very relaxing and restorative as a whole. As well as an auditory focus, sound therapy also includes vibrational therapy, which is when sound tools and instruments are applied directly to areas of the body to help ease muscle tension and promote a sense of calm.
Sound therapy sessions can incorporate a wide range of sound tools and instruments, including and not limited to:
- Weighted and unweighted tuning forks
- Tibetan and crystal bowls
- Therapeutic drone harp
- Alchemy bowl
- Harmony chimes
Sound therapy sessions utilise touch (in the form of gentle and supportive holds of the body) to help integrate the sounds introduced throughout each session. It is administered over the top of clothing, and is generally regarded as non-invasive and safe for most people. Each session is tailored specifically to your individual needs, where you can expect to be held in a nurturing environment that is non-judgmental, encouraging and supportive at all times. It is a wonderful supportive therapy that works well alongside other therapies.

Kellie — Your Sound Practitioner

Kellie is a dedicated sound practitioner who completed her Sound Healing Therapy Diploma (Levels 1 and 2) with Ram Davies, from Sound Healing Aotearoa. She offers individual one on one sound therapy sessions from her private sound studio located near the Recovery Pod, as well as group sound workshops and soundscapes/sound journey work. Kellie has a comprehensive background in trauma support work, which greatly informs how she works with sound and the body. Client safety is of utmost importance to her. She firmly believes that enabling people to feel safe, seen and supported is a major catalyst in supporting deep personal growth and transformation.
Kellie completed her Master's in Criminology in 2012, choosing to specialise in Sexual Violence. She is passionate about justice related issues, and advocating for and supporting people who have experienced complex trauma. Post completing her studies, she worked as a specialist Sexual Violence Victims Advisor in the New Zealand Court system. While in this role, she supported people who had experienced complex trauma, most notably sexual violence and domestic violence, assisting them through the difficult and enduring court process. Thereafter, she worked in social policy, helping to make sure social service providers were delivering safe and effective programmes and services across Aotearoa. Community and individual wellbeing has always been at the heart of what has motivated Kellie in her professional working career.
Kellie has had a life long fascination with sound, and regularly uses sound practices as a way to support her own growth. Kellie's interest in working with sound in a therapeutic sense was spurred by her own personal health journey. Five years ago, Kellie began experiencing chronic and unexplained pain and inflammation, including various unexplained sensitivities and frequent allergic reactions. Sound therapy created a pathway for relief, which is why she is passionate about sharing its physical, emotional and mental health supportive benefits with others.
If you're unsure whether sound therapy is right for you, Kellie is more than happy to give you a call prior to booking to answer any questions that you may have.
